Working with Dragons

This is a story I wrote many years ago. I never did finish it.

-----

The sky erupted into a rainbow of colors. The sun glistened off the wings of silver, golds, blue, greens, reds, and yellows. They were working together, much like the rest of the world: humans and elves, dwarfs and gnomes, everyone.

The dragons and their riders were cleaning up the town of Kallasha. They were carrying debris and rubble out into the field. The townspeople and others were sorting out which pieces could be salvaged.

“When we get done with this town, what are we going to do?” Natala asked to her dragon partner.

“We’ll move on to another town. Help others rebuild,” replied Shimmer, a well-respected, silver dragon.

“But, what will we do when all the towns have been rebuilt and everyone has their lives back?” asked Natala.

“I don’t know. I just don’t know,” said Shimmer with a sad sign.

Back on the ground, Matteo, Stala, and Nadia were sorting the rubble.

“So, we have to go through all this, why?” Stala asked.

“We’re doing this to help people and to get some money. You want to go home, don’t you?” Matteo replied with a flash of annoyance. “Okay, Nadia, can you get started? Nadia? Nadia, where are you now?”

“She’s over there,” said Stala pointing across the field to a pile.
